Access Excellence, launched in 1993, is a national educational program that provides health, biology and life science teachers access to their colleagues, scientists, and critical sources of new scientific information via the World Wide Web. The program was originally developed and launched by Genentech Inc., and in 1999 joined the National Health Museum, a non-profit organization founded by former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop as a national center for health education. Access Excellence will form the core of the educational component of the National Health Museum Website that is currently under development.

Science and Nature

We aim to use the best of the BBC – its content, channels of communication, talent and creative skills – to offer resources and activities designed to meet real needs and complement the formal education process. Through today’s interactive media, such as broadband internet and mobile devices, we can offer people powerful learning experiences in their own time and at their own pace. We also reach out into real communities, working closely with partners already established there.

Our priorities are to:

  • promote the learning of school-age children

  • Support the needs of teachers

  • Provide information and advice for parents to support their children's learning

  • inspire teenagers through their interests outside formal learning

  • motivate adults to improve their skills

  • help people to develop the media literacy skills needed in the modern digital world

  • offer opportunities for learning through active participation

The Biology Corner is a resource site for biology and science teachers. The Lesson Plans section contains classroom activities, labs and worksheets, feel free to change any of these to suit your own classroom needs. The Webquest section contains inquiry based projects that utilize the internet. Internet lessons (also called miniquests) are smaller activities that use one or two science related web sites for the students to explore and answer questions about. Again, feel free to modify these activities so that they work for your class and your style of teaching.

I've been making it a personal mission to locate and compile interactive science education sites. Some web programs like Flash can create some amazing virtual labs that students can really benefit from. You will find many of these places in the section under internet lessons, all of which utilize fantastic websites to help students understand scientific concepts. Please contact me if you know of other sites (particularly shockwave virtual labs) and I'll add more lessons.

Dolan DNA Learning Center Resources

The mission of the Dolan DNA Learning Center is to prepare students and families to thrive in the gene age. We envision a day when all elementary students are exposed to principles of genetics and disease risk; when all high school students have the opportunity to do hands-on experiments with DNA; and when all families have access to genetic information they need to make informed health care choices.
The Dolan DNA Learning Center (DNALC) is the world's first science center devoted entirely to genetics education and is an operating unit of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, an important center for molecular genetics research. The DNALC extends the Laboratory's traditional research and postgraduate education mission to the college, precollege, and public levels.

Discovering New Knowledge

We live in an era of discovery. Each day, scientists bring us closer to understanding fundamental questions about human life. How does the brain process information and store knowledge? How do mutations in key genes cause disease? How do cells communicate? The challenge of solving these and other questions - as well as the promise of what those answers might yield - drives the quest for knowledge at the heart of our work at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute produces many award-winning, free science education resources on DVD, VHS, CD-ROM and the web. Animations, virtual labs, museums etc

 What is JASON?

Welcome to The JASON Project, your gateway to adventure.
A nonprofit subsidiary of the National Geographic Society, JASON connects young students with great explorers and great events to inspire and motivate them to learn science. Its core curriculum units are designed for 5th – 8th grade classrooms but are flexible enough to be adapted for higher or lower grades.

Lighting the spark of inspiration through sustained connections with "great explorers and great events" in core curriculum is what JASON is all about. Led by host researchers from National Geographic, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), JASON curriculum units put students on meaningful missions to learn core Earth, life and physical science concepts. The result is deeper student engagement, increased motivation and higher achievement.

JASON's science curriculum units are designed to fit within school districts' core curricula for 5th – 10th grades and can be adapted for use at higher or lower levels. Aligned to state and national science standards, they provide at least five to nine weeks of material with suggested lesson plans, extensions, interdisciplinary connections and teacher resources for alignment, assessment and classroom management.

NOVA follows scientists as they seek signs of life on Mars.

The program:

  • reviews early missions to Mars.

  • follows the trials and triumphs of the Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, as they land on and navigate the Red Planet.

  • shows how scientists used tools on each rover to explore and determine the chemical makeup of the planet's surface.

  • notes that while some scientists think that water once flowed on Mars and may have sustained life, other scientists maintain that the planet's environmental conditions would not have supported life.

  • features scientists who investigate whether microbes can survive in salty Arctic springs on Earth.

  • reports on the Phoenix Mars Lander's efforts to find signs of liquid water in the northern polar region of Mars.

  • shows how the team troubleshoots the lander's equipment difficulties.

  • reveals how the lander found evidence of water on the Red Planet.

  • notes that one test showed signs of the chemical percholate in the Martian soil and reports that researchers have identified organisms on Earth that thrive on percholate.

  • describes plans for the next mission in 2010—the Mars Science Laboratory—that will search for organics on Mars.
